My husband and I recently went on the 3 night/4 day tour from Marrakech out to the desert and back. We travel a lot, and this was one of the most incredible experiences we’ve had yet. Rachyd was our guide for the tour, and he really made the trip fantastic. He is extremely knowledgeable of the country and sights, he speaks very good English, and he is so friendly, welcoming, and open.
Rachyd collected us as our Riad in Marrakech, right on time, and we began the journey from there. The car was an SUV - comfortable, plenty of room, and it had air conditioning. At the beginning of each day, Rachyd explained exactly what we would be doing: where we were driving, how long it would take, and what we could expect from the course of the day. Our trip took us through the Atlas Mountains, Dades Gorge, Rose Valley, Ait Benhaddou Kasbah, Erg Chebbi dunes, Rissani, Erfoud, Draa Valley, and Ouarzazate. In addition, he was accommodating to us and added in extra little stops for things that were not on the itinerary but that we had particular interest to see. He would explain how much extra time it would take/what that would mean for timing to our next stop, etc. We hadn’t known about any of these additional sights beforehand; we only learned of them upon talking with Rachyd about our background and interests, which then prompted him to recommend them.
For our first and third nights, we stayed at hotels (the room stay as well as dinner are included in the tour price, but if you want alcohol that is extra). Both hotels were very nice, and the dinners also very good. The second night we stayed in the desert; we had a luxury tent fully equipped with functioning toilet and shower. However, it was a bit hot in the tent, so we actually slept outside on the sand dunes under the stars.
The experience of our night in the Sahara was truly life-changing. We had an amazing camel ride through the dunes and then we sat down to a delicious feast under the stars. In addition, we were joined by about 5 or more musicians who played drums and sang, and encouraged us to sing and dance. It was a great party, and we spent hours talking with Rachyd and some of the other guys, learning about Moroccan culture and exchanging life experiences.
In summary, if you are considering a trip to Morocco and the Sahara, you should absolutely do it and book with Rachyd! He is the best guide we have ever had over our numerous travels/trips over the years, he really made the experience extremely memorable, fun and informative. We learned so much about Moroccan culture and history, and especially the Berber culture. Rachyd is from this region of the country, and he knows many of the people who live in the areas we travelled through.
